TRANSCRIPTIONS – NEEDS AND ACCESSIBILITY

The use of audiovisual publications is constantly increasing in public administration organisations, research institutes, and the media. However, analysing, processing and archiving this material requires transcribing their audio content into text. 

Since the introduction of the European Accessibility Act, public service organisations have been required to provide text-based versions of all of their audiovisual publications. For example, a podcast episode needs a text equivalent so that its contents can reach all potential users. Professional transcription is the key to reaching the widest possible audience. 

In addition to speech, a transcription can include other illustrative details or timestamps that can be used to link the text to the parts of a recording. These details can include environmental descriptions, such as <music> or <wind blowing in the trees>, or information illustrating a speaker’s mood or intentions, like <grunt>, <sigh> or <laugh>. In other words, speech can be transcribed into metatext to improve its comprehensibility and accessibility.

DIFFERENT LEVELS OF TRANSCRIPTION 

We offer different levels of transcription, based on your needs. The level you choose determines the level of detail of the transcription itself. You can choose between a basic level transcription, a standard language transcription, an exact transcription, or a conversation analysis transcription. 

BASIC TRANSCRIPTION  

The content and relevant soundscape in the audio recording are carefully transcribed while taking into account the comprehensibility of the text: any unnecessary filler words are excluded from the transcription, and the fluency of the language can be edited for clarity. Any colloquialisms are retained. 

STANDARD LANGUAGE TRANSCRIPTION

The same content as in a basic transcription, but any colloquial expressions are replaced with general expressions. 

EXACT TRANSCRIPTION 

All filler words, repetitions, moments of hesitation and silent communication, such as pauses, are included in the transcription.  

CONVERSATION ANALYSIS TRANSCRIPTION 

A form of transcription that includes all client-mandated details, such as intonation, overlapping speech, emphases, and pause lengths.

PLANNING AND ORDERING A TRANSCRIPTION PROJECT


1. Audio quality 
When producing your recording, pay attention to your audio quality. Make sure that you can hear the speaker’s voice.  

2. Recording duration 
Remember that you can remove any empty audio or unnecessary sections.  

3. Recording size 
The size of your recording will have an impact on its transfer and processing. Please make sure that your file size is as small and light as possible. 

4. Order details 
When placing your order, specify at least the following: what language(s) are present on the recording, the level of transcription you need, the number of speakers present, and whether the recording includes any dialects or specialised vocabulary.
